A wave of grief has swept through the Catholic Diocese of Awka following the sudden death of one of its revered priests, Reverend Father Anthony Nnaemeka Udogu, who collapsed and died on Monday, May 19, 2025, while playing a game of lawn tennis.

The incident occurred in the early hours of the day. Eyewitnesses report that Father Udogu was enjoying a routine match when he suddenly slumped on the court. He was immediately rushed to a nearby hospital, but despite frantic medical efforts, he was confirmed dead shortly after arrival.

Father Udogu, who until his death served as the Parish Priest of St. Francis Parish in Awka, also held the position of Dean of the Awka II Deanery. His unexpected demise has left parishioners, fellow clergy, and the entire diocese in deep mourning.

In an official statement released on Tuesday, the Catholic Diocese of Awka confirmed the heartbreaking news, noting that Reverend Udogu passed away shortly after collapsing during the recreational game. The diocese expressed profound sorrow and extended condolences to his family, parishioners, and all who were touched by his ministry.

Born on December 24, 1964, and ordained a priest on August 19, 1995, Father Udogu had spent three decades in devoted service to the Church, earning a reputation as a dedicated shepherd of the faithful and a compassionate community leader.

Tributes have begun to pour in from all corners of the diocese, with many describing him as a humble, prayerful, and selfless man of God whose impact will not be forgotten.

Funeral arrangements are expected to be announced by the Diocese in the coming days.

As the Church mourns, many are reflecting on his legacy of faith, service, and humility that defined his priestly vocation.
