The political landscape of Cross River State mourns the loss of Honorable Chris Ngoro Agibe, a former member of Nigeria’s House of Representatives, who represented the Ikom/Boki Federal Constituency. Agibe’s passing was confirmed on May 18, 2025, by close associates, marking the end of a notable career in both politics and public service.

Born in 1961, Chris Agibe was an accomplished engineer, graduating from the University of Ife (now Obafemi Awolowo University) in 1984. He served his country as part of the Nigerian Army Engineering Corps between 1986 and 1990, before transitioning into the private sector where he headed Sustainable Energy at the United Cement Company from 2007 to 2012.

His political journey saw him elected to the House of Representatives in 2019 on the platform of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP), where he served until 2023. During his tenure, Agibe became well-known for championing the controversial use of Dichlorodiphenyltrichloroethane (DDT) as a measure to combat malaria in Nigeria, a stance that sparked extensive public discussion.

Beyond politics, Agibe was deeply involved in cultural endeavors, notably leading the Passion 4 band to a remarkable second-place finish at the 2024 Carnival Calabar, showcasing his passion for community engagement and cultural promotion.

At this time, details surrounding the cause of his death remain undisclosed. Tributes from colleagues, community members, and political leaders are anticipated as the state pays homage to a man who contributed significantly to public service and cultural life in Cross River.
