In a bold and emotionally charged move that has sent ripples through the political landscape of Enugu State, Hon. Ezeugwu Ikechukwu Meletus, Ph.D., has officially resigned from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP). The resignation, dated 18th May 2025, was addressed to the Ward Chairman of the PDP in Udunedem Ward, Udenu Local Government Area, Enugu State. The veteran lawmaker and former Leader of the Enugu State House of Assembly did not mince words in his detailed resignation letter, accusing the party of betrayal, deceit, and a lack of meritocracy.
Hon. Ezeugwu, who served as a member of the Enugu State House of Assembly from 2011 to 2023 and was the Assembly Leader from 2015 to 2023, cited the events leading up to the 2023 general elections as the breaking point in his long-standing affiliation with the PDP. He expressed disappointment with the party leadership, accusing them of being driven by selfishness and sacrificing merit for mediocrity.
Below is the full text of his resignation letter:
LETTER OF RESIGNATION AS A MEMBER OF PDP
I hereby tender my resignation as a member of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), effective immediately.
For the records, the breaking point for me was, but not limited to, the events during the build–up to the 2023 general elections. The party leadership with their allies, driven by selfishness, arrogated to themselves the responsibility and clumsily selected candidates for the elections against the advice of well-meaning members of the party. In many instances, merit was glaringly sacrificed on the altar of mediocrity and deceit was ingloriously elevated to unimaginable proportions. I thank God for giving me the wisdom to reject a gift of a Trojan Horse then. I was slated to have been economically grounded and politically ridiculed but they forgot that my name is IKECHUKWU.
Many vibrant first-time members of the State House of Assembly and other members as well as other politicians in the State were not given the opportunity to fly the party’s flag for the election after they were deceitfully encouraged to embark on countless constituency empowerments and campaigns with the assurances that they would be given the opportunity to do so. Those who were given such opportunity were left in the middle of nowhere when they needed support and encouragement as the party leadership was busy flirting around with the candidates of the other political parties who were vying for the highest political office at the national level.
This was very depressing for me especially as members of the 7th Assembly of Enugu State gave their best to the State.
For me, trust is a fundamental aspect of any relationship and without it relationships can become challenging to maintain.
It is pitiful, shameful and heartbreaking that Papas Deceived Pikins who respected, trusted and treated them as fathers; DECEITOCRACY.
(Signed)
Ezeugwu Ikechukwu, Ph.D.
Member, Enugu State House of Assembly (2011–2023)
Leader, Enugu State House of Assembly (2015–2023)"
The former Assembly Leader's resignation comes as a significant blow to the PDP in Enugu State, particularly as it reflects a deep sense of disillusionment not only from a long-time party loyalist but from a respected legislator with a proven track record of service.
Hon. Ezeugwu’s reference to “DECEITOCRACY” a term he coined in the letter to describe what he perceives as systemic betrayal and deceit, underscores the level of his discontent. His departure also raises questions about the internal democracy and candidate selection processes within the party, especially as many political observers have often accused parties of sidelining competent candidates in favor of handpicked loyalists.
Political analysts believe this resignation could trigger further defections within the party ranks, especially from those who feel marginalized or betrayed in similar ways. The impact on the PDP's structure and cohesion in Udenu LGA and across Enugu State remains to be seen, but this development undoubtedly marks a turning point in the local political narrative.
