Abia State Governor, Alex Otti has reportedly intervened to halt a convoy of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) after the agency arrested more than 59 youths and attempted to transfer them to Abuja.
According to eyewitness accounts and circulating reports, the EFCC operatives had conducted a raid in Aba earlier today, apprehending dozens of young men under yet-to-be-disclosed allegations. As the agency’s convoy attempted to leave the city, Governor Otti’s security team intercepted and blocked their movement on his direct orders.
Governor Otti is said to have demanded the immediate release of all 59 youths, emphasizing that such actions would not be tolerated under his administration.
“Aba boys are not thieves or killer herdsmen. No such arrests of my people will happen under my watch. Head back to Sokoto and arrest the Fulani herdsmen, not innocent Aba youths,” Governor Otti reportedly stated.
The bold move has sparked nationwide debate over the role of federal agencies in state affairs and the rights of citizens during such operations.
As of press time, the EFCC has not issued an official response.
