NiMet Predicts Three-Day Thunderstorms, Haziness Across Nigeria



The Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMet) has predicted thunderstorms and haziness across different parts of Nigeria from Sunday, April 27, to Tuesday, April 29, 2025.

In its weather outlook released on Saturday in Abuja, NiMet forecasted moderate dust haze over parts of Katsina, Sokoto, Zamfara, Borno, Kano, Yobe, and Jigawa States throughout the forecast period.

It also projected isolated thunderstorms in areas within Adamawa and Taraba States.

For the North-Central region, NiMet expects partly cloudy skies during the morning hours, with isolated thunderstorms anticipated in the afternoon and evening across the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Plateau, Kogi, Nasarawa, and Benue States.

In the Southern region, morning thunderstorms are likely in parts of Lagos, Cross River, Rivers, Bayelsa, and Akwa Ibom States, with further thunderstorms predicted later in the day across several southern states.

On Monday, NiMet anticipates sunny skies over the northern part of the country, alongside morning thunderstorms in Taraba and Adamawa States. Thunderstorms are also expected to extend later in the day to Kaduna, Bauchi, and Gombe States.

In the North-Central, morning thunderstorms are likely over Plateau, Nasarawa, and Benue States, with afternoon and evening thunderstorms expected across different areas of the region.

The Southern states are projected to experience morning thunderstorms in Bayelsa, Cross River, Akwa Ibom, Rivers, and Edo States, with continued thunderstorm activity later in the day across the southern belt.

On Tuesday, NiMet forecasted sunny skies with patches of clouds in the northern part of Nigeria. Morning thunderstorms are expected in Adamawa and Taraba States, while afternoon and evening thunderstorms are predicted in parts of Kaduna, Adamawa, and Taraba States.

The North-Central region is expected to experience partly cloudy conditions in the morning, followed by thunderstorms in the afternoon and evening over parts of the Federal Capital Territory, Kogi, Kwara, Benue, and Niger States.

In the South, morning thunderstorms are expected in Akwa Ibom, Cross River, and Bayelsa States, with further thunderstorms likely in several southern states as the day progresses.

NiMet advised members of the public to take necessary precautions, warning that strong winds could precede thunderstorms, potentially causing damage. It also urged people in the North to remain vigilant as dust particles could remain suspended in the air, posing health risks.

Airline operators were strongly encouraged to obtain airport-specific weather reports from NiMet to aid effective flight planning.
