MASSOB Slams U.S. Ambassador Over Meeting with Fulani Herdsmen Leaders

The Movement for the Actualization of the Sovereign State of Biafra (MASSOB) has strongly criticised the recent meeting between the United States Ambassador to Nigeria, Mr. Richard M. Mills Jr., and leaders of the Miyetti Allah Cattle Breeders Association of Nigeria (MACBAN), representing Fulani herdsmen.

In a statement issued on Monday, MASSOB expressed deep concern over the diplomatic implications of the engagement, warning that it could further fuel ethnic tensions and social unrest in Nigeria.

According to Comrade Uchenna Madu, MASSOB’s leader, the meeting represents what could be perceived as an endorsement of a group that has consistently been linked to violent conflicts, land seizures, and mass killings across various parts of the country.

“The meeting constitutes a troubling endorsement of the Fulani herdsmen, who have been widely involved in mass killings, violent conflicts, and land snatching across Nigeria,” Madu said.

He stressed that such diplomatic moves risk legitimising the alleged atrocities committed by the group, especially in the Middle Belt and southern regions, where communities have been devastated by clashes linked to herders.

MASSOB further warned that the development could escalate feelings of marginalisation among other ethnic groups, particularly in the South-East and Middle Belt regions. The organisation described the meeting as “diplomatic support for the Fulani agenda of illegal occupation of indigenous citizens’ land.”

“This engagement sends a dangerous message that could embolden violent groups and widen the divide among Nigeria’s diverse ethnic nationalities,” Madu added.

Calling for a more balanced diplomatic approach, MASSOB urged international partners to prioritise inclusive peacebuilding that addresses the concerns of all indigenous communities.

“We advocate for a balanced approach that fosters peace and unity among all ethnic indigenous communities,” Madu concluded.
