In a rare and surprising twist, a 28-year-old internet fraudster from Oredo Local Government Area, Edo State, voluntarily surrendered himself to the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) on Monday, April 8, 2025.
According to a statement released by the EFCC on April 11, the man turned himself in at the Benin Zonal Directorate and was received by Assistant Commander of the EFCC (ACEI) Effam Okim, the Acting Zonal Director.
He confessed:
“I reported myself because I wanted to stop and turn a new leaf.”
The EFCC revealed that the suspect specialized in romance scam variants of internet fraud. He deceived foreign victims by claiming to be a Chinese medical doctor working in a war-torn country, using a mobile app to communicate in Chinese and lure them into fake love relationships.
He admitted:
“I tell my victims how beautiful and attractive they are, and I profess love to them.”
The Commission commended the act of surrender while urging other perpetrators to turn away from crime and embrace honesty.
