A Nigerian financial instructor, Kalu Aja, has expressed concerns over the worsening economic situation in the country after witnessing a new development in the food market.
Kalu Aja shared a photo on social media showing a loaf of sliced bread being sold in halves at a store in Nigeria. He described the situation as both “shameful and painful,” noting it as a stark indicator of the deepening poverty affecting the middle class.
In his post on X (formerly Twitter), he wrote:
“This is sachet bread, sold in 234.
Omo, this is shameful and painful at the same time.
I commend the bakery for thinking outside the box. I weep for the eviscerated middle class.
If bread is sold in slices and spaghetti in bundles, then the poverty smells like a two weeks dead goat in a beautiful mansion.
God help you because that’s where your only help will come from.”
His reaction highlights the drastic adjustments Nigerians are making in response to the ongoing economic hardship, with basic necessities like bread now being rationed into smaller, more affordable units.
