Tragedy struck at the University of Benin Teaching Hospital (UBTH) on Friday as a young physiotherapist, simply identified as Alex, was shot dead by yet-to-be-identified gunmen while on duty.
According to reports, the assailants stormed the hospital premises and opened fire on Alex, who was in his twenties, causing panic among patients and staff. Eyewitnesses said health workers and patients fled in all directions during the terrifying incident.
The motive behind the attack remains unclear as investigations continue.
In response, members of the UBTH Physiotherapy Department staged a peaceful protest within the hospital grounds. In a widely circulated video, the protesters were seen holding placards and chanting in protest of the gruesome murder of their colleague. The demonstrators called for justice and stronger security measures in the hospital.
The Public Relations Officer of UBTH, Mr. Joshua Uwaila, confirmed the incident. He said the hospital management had reported the matter to security agencies and is awaiting further developments from the ongoing investigation.
This shocking killing adds to the growing concerns over rising insecurity and violent crimes in Edo State, prompting calls for urgent government intervention to protect lives and restore order.
