Armed Herdsmen Attack Another Enugu Community, Brutally Murder Four Farmers On Farmlands

No fewer than four farmers were murdered on their farms in Adani community, Uzo-Uwani Local Government Area of Enugu State, by suspected Fulani herdsmen.

The victims were said to have been slaughtered on Tuesday afternoon while working on their farmlands. According to reports, the assailants stormed the farms and carried out the attack with brutality.

A resident, Chijindu Omeje, confirmed the killings, revealing that his cousin’s in-law, named Emenike, who was in his early 40s, was among those killed. Another victim was reportedly a tree feller.

“Yes, four persons including women farmers were killed on Tuesday at Adani farm,” Omeje said. “One of the persons killed is my cousin’s in-law, Emenike. I don’t know his actual age but he is not less than 40 years. The assailants who were all Fulani herdsmen also killed a tree feller.”

In addition to the killings, the Adani-Ogurugu road has reportedly become a danger zone, with gunmen — believed to be the same herdsmen — kidnapping travellers and residents over the past three weeks.

Omeje described the situation as dire, noting that the Chairman of Uzo-Uwani LGA, Barr. Chijioke Ezeugwu, appeared helpless and called for urgent government intervention to enable farmers return to their lands without fear.

Meanwhile, Chairman Ezeugwu has assured local farmers of protection, stating that he had directed security operatives to secure farmlands and surrounding bushes. This was during a security awareness tour of the local government on April 8, 2025, alongside the Chief Security Officer (CSO) of the Enugu Government House, as shared in a Facebook post by one Sen Chijinkem Ugwuanyi.

“Farming is very important to all of us. Food security is the worst form of insecurity. Therefore, we will not allow food insecurity to surface in this part where we have started to witness a substantial return of peace and stability,” Ezeugwu said.

He emphasized that security operatives have begun bush combing and warned miscreants operating in the area to vacate or face the consequences. The Chairman also urged residents to remain vigilant and cooperate with the police, military, neighbourhood watch, and other security agencies.

However, when contacted, the Enugu State Police Public Relations Officer, SP Daniel Ndukwe, denied knowledge of the attack. In a text message to some journalists, he wrote:

“There is no report of such an incident please.”
