Former Deputy Governor of Osun State, Benedict Alabi, has officially declared his intention to contest the 2026 governorship election under the platform of the All Progressives Congress (APC).
The announcement was made during a special service at Saint Peter’s Catholic Church in Ile-Ife. Alabi, who hails from Ikire in Irewole LGA—part of the Osun West Senatorial District—stated that his decision followed deep reflection and divine guidance.
His declaration comes amid growing calls within the APC for the 2026 ticket to be zoned to Osun West, especially if former Governor Adegboyega Oyetola opts out of the race.
Addressing the congregation, Alabi said, “I have sought guidance from God and, having received direction, I am informing the good people of Osun that I will run in the 2026 governorship election.”
Alabi served as Deputy Governor during Oyetola's administration and could potentially face incumbent Governor Ademola Adeleke if he seeks re-election.
Expressing confidence in his campaign, Alabi emphasized development and unity: “We shall emerge victorious by God’s grace. Our goal is to work towards the advancement of our dear state and uplift the lives of our people.”
He also encouraged continued prayers for Nigeria, describing it as a spiritual homeland: “Nigeria is the Jerusalem for Nigerians. I want to encourage families to come together for the progress of our nation.”
With this declaration, Alabi becomes one of the earliest APC members to officially enter the 2026 governorship race, setting the tone for a competitive political season in Osun State.
