Enugu State has a new Commissioner of Police as CP Mamman Bitrus Giwa officially takes over from AIG Kanayo Uzuegbu, who was recently promoted and redeployed.
The appointment of CP Giwa was confirmed by the Enugu State Police Public Relations Officer, SP Daniel Ndukwe, in a statement to Daily Gazette on Tuesday.
Profile of CP Mamman Bitrus Giwa
A native of Paikoro, Niger State, CP Giwa holds a Bachelor’s degree in Economics from Bayero University, Kano. Since joining the Nigeria Police Force as a Cadet Assistant Superintendent in 1994, he has built an extensive career in law enforcement, holding several key positions across the country.
His previous roles include:
- Personal Assistant to a Commissioner of Police
- Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO) in Gombe State
- Commanding Officer, No. 3 Police Mobile Force (PMF) Squadron, Enugu
- Leadership roles in PMF units in Calabar, Yola, and Owerri
- Divisional Police Officer (DPO) in Jigawa State
- Assistant Commissioner of Police (ACP) in FCT Command
- Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCP) in charge of Operations in Imo and Kaduna States
Before his latest appointment, CP Giwa served as the DCP overseeing Community Safety and Crime Prevention at Force Headquarters, Abuja.
Track Record in Security Operations
CP Giwa has played a pivotal role in security operations nationwide, notably serving as the Police Component Commander for Operation Whirl Punch in Kaduna, which has now merged into the Joint Task Force in the North-West, codenamed Operation Fansan Yamma.
Additionally, he has acted as Commissioner of Police in both Imo and Kaduna States, bringing with him a wealth of experience in counterinsurgency and crime prevention.
A seasoned security strategist, CP Giwa has undergone specialized training in combat and operational tactics, advanced detective work, and countering violent extremism. His contributions to policing have earned him multiple commendations from the Inspector-General of Police (IGP) and awards for excellence in squadron leadership.
His Vision for Enugu State
Upon assuming duty, CP Giwa pledged to implement a proactive, professional, and community-friendly policing strategy in line with the vision of Inspector-General of Police, IGP Kayode Egbetokun.
"We will prioritize intelligence-driven policing, strengthen community engagement, and work closely with all security stakeholders to ensure Enugu remains safe for all," he assured.
He also urged residents to cooperate with the police, report suspicious activities, and contribute towards the security of the state.
Personal Life and Interests
Married with children, CP Giwa enjoys physical exercise, table tennis, and basketball.
His assumption of office comes at a critical time when security challenges remain a priority for both the state government and law enforcement agencies.
As the new Enugu State Commissioner of Police, CP Mamman Bitrus Giwa is expected to build on the successes of his predecessor and introduce innovative strategies to combat crime and enhance public safety.
