BREAKING: Former President Is Dead!

Sam Nujoma, the founding father and first president of Namibia, passed away on Saturday at the age of 95. His death was confirmed by the Namibian presidency, which stated that Nujoma had been hospitalized for the past three weeks and was unable to recover from his illness.

President Nangolo Mbumba expressed deep sorrow in announcing the loss of the revered freedom fighter and revolutionary leader. He praised Nujoma for living a long and impactful life, dedicating much of it to serving the people of Namibia.

Nujoma was born into a poor family in the Ovambo tribe and went on to become a pivotal figure in Namibia’s struggle for independence from South Africa. His journey began as a railway sweeper before becoming politically active in the 1950s, and later leading the South West Peoples’ Organisation (SWAPO). Nujoma’s efforts, including the launch of an armed struggle in 1966, eventually led to Namibia gaining independence in 1990. He became the country's first democratically elected president and served for three terms, guiding Namibia through a period of prosperity and stability.

Despite his legacy as a key figure in Namibia's liberation, Nujoma’s presidency was also marked by controversy. He was criticized for not rehabilitating members of his movement who had been imprisoned by Angola, and for his strong anti-homosexuality stance.

After his presidency, Nujoma’s influence remained significant, even as he handed power to his successor, Hifikepunye Pohamba, in 2005. Nujoma is remembered for his visionary leadership and commitment to the independence and development of Namibia.

President-elect Netumbo Nandi-Ndaitwah paid tribute to Nujoma, highlighting his foundational role in building the free and united nation that Namibia is today.
