Umar Ahmed Jada, the Comptroller of the Nigeria Customs Service (NCS) for Plateau/Nasarawa/Benue Command, is currently embroiled in controversy after allegedly overstaying his tenure. Documents obtained by SaharaReporters reveal that Umar was initially scheduled to retire in December 2023, with his pre-retirement leave set to begin in September 2023.
However, a circular dated May 10, 2022, indicated that Umar was supposed to retire by December 2023. In a surprising turn, a new circular surfaced showing that his retirement date has been moved to December 31, 2024, with his birthdate altered from December 1963 to December 1964.
Despite this adjustment, it is reported that Umar has refused to step down and continues to hold office, even after his official retirement date had passed. Sources claim that he remains in control of the command, occupying an official residence and using official vehicles.
This development comes amidst growing concerns in the NCS about several high-ranking officers overstaying their service years and lobbying for extensions, disrupting the normal operations of the agency.
This situation has raised alarms about potential disruptions and confusion within the public service sector, as these actions seem to go against established rules for retirement and succession planning.
