Court Convicts Lovers for Adultery, Remands Them in Prison Custody

A Gwagwalada Magistrates’ Court in Abuja has remanded two lovers, Mohammed Nazifi (30) and Bilkisu Ibrahim (25), in the Suleja Correctional Centre, after they pleaded guilty to adultery. The couple will remain in custody pending their sentencing on January 29, 2025.

Magistrate Olatunji Oladunmoye issued the remand order following the lovers' summary trial, during which they admitted to the charge of adultery. Both Nazifi and Ibrahim, residents of Gui Village, Airport Road, Abuja, pleaded for leniency.

Nazifi claimed he was unaware of Ibrahim's marital status and admitted their sexual intercourse was consensual. Ibrahim confirmed the act, acknowledging her knowledge that it was wrong, particularly under Islamic law, as she was still married to another man. She expressed remorse and pleaded for forgiveness from both her husband and the court.

The prosecution, led by Dabo Yakubu, told the court that the complainant, Mr. Dayabe Abdullahi, reported the incident at the Gwagwalada Area Command on January 16. Both Nazifi and Ibrahim confessed to the crime in their statements. The charges contravened sections 387 and 388 of the Penal Code, which criminalize adultery.

The case is set for sentencing on January 29, 2025.
