Reacting to an excessive and endless extortion by his inlaws, David Biobelemoye walked out of his own marriage ceremony due to excessive extortion by the bride’s family. The groom, who had already paid a substantial amount for the wedding, found himself caught in a series of unexpected demands that led to his frustration and eventual disappearance.
David had already spent N1,500,000 to cover costs for food, tents, chairs, and a public address system. Additionally, he set aside N100,000 as the agreed-upon bride price between the two families. However, his troubles began when the bride’s family demanded an additional N50,000 because he had impregnated the bride before the ceremony.
To make matters worse, David was slapped with a N10,000 fine for taking a wrong turn and arriving at a different homestead. He was further asked to pay N15,000 to appease the elders who had become tired of waiting for his arrival.
The situation escalated when twelve girls, dressed in loose robes from head to toe, were paraded before David and he was asked to identify his fiancée. Unfortunately, he pointed to the wrong woman, resulting in an additional fine of N15,000.
The final straw came when the elders demanded a refund of N850,000, the amount they claimed had been spent on the bride’s education and upkeep since her primary school days.
Fuming with anger, which he tried to conceal, Biobelemoye David excused himself to visit a nearby latrine. He then disappeared, switching off his phone, and was last seen boarding a bus heading to Bayelsa State from Imo.
