The Governor of Borno State, Babagana Zulum, has revealed that some individuals and groups are profiting from the prolonged insurgency and terrorism affecting the region. Zulum made this statement while appearing on Channels TV on Sunday night. He explained that these beneficiaries are not limited to Borno alone but are spread across the nation, involving both civilians and military personnel.
Zulum noted that there have been cases of informants within communities, as well as military officers supplying ammunition to insurgents, further complicating efforts to restore peace in the region. These individuals and groups, he stated, are benefitting from the ongoing crisis and do not want to see it come to an end.
The governor also pointed to foreign involvement and the state's porous borders, especially around Lake Chad and the Sambisa forest, as contributing factors that provide safe zones for terrorist activities. The regions' borders, he emphasized, create conditions conducive for insurgents to operate freely.
Zulum's comments highlight the complex nature of the insurgency and terrorism in the region, as both internal and external factors continue to fuel the crisis.
