SAD! Gunmen Kill Architect Four Days to His Mother's Burial

Port Harcourt-based architect, Engr. Asomba Andrew Egbuonu, a native of Anambra State, has tragically lost his life to gun violence in Nnewi, just four days before the scheduled burial of his late mother.

The late Egbuonu, a Fellow of the Nigerian Institute of Architects (FNIA) and a Knight of St. John (KSJ), was renowned for his contributions to the field of architecture. He was also the Chairman of the Architectural Exhibitions and Competitions Committee of the Nigerian Institute of Architects (NIA) and a former Chairman of the NIA Rivers State chapter.

Confirming the tragic incident, the General Secretary of the NIA, Chike Chamberlain Ibeanu, expressed deep sorrow over the loss of their esteemed colleague. According to Ibeanu, Egbuonu was attacked by unidentified gunmen near his hometown of Nnewi on Sunday, November 17, 2024, and succumbed to complications from gunshot wounds. He had been making final preparations for his mother’s burial, scheduled for Thursday, November 21, 2024, when the fatal attack occurred.

In a heartfelt message, Ibeanu described the late architect as a dedicated professional and a cherished member of the institute. He called on colleagues to pray for the repose of Egbuonu’s soul and to extend their thoughts and prayers to his grieving family during this difficult time.

The tragic incident has cast a shadow over what should have been a period of solemn commemoration for the Egbuonu family. The late architect’s contributions to the architectural profession and his community will be remembered and celebrated, even as his untimely death underscores the pervasive security challenges in the region.

Further details regarding the circumstances of the attack remain unclear as investigations are ongoing.
