The family of the late Chief of Army Staff, Lt. General Taoreed Lagbaja, has shed light on the circumstances surrounding his sudden passing, attributing it to unresolved land disputes in their hometown of Ilobu, Osun State, which they believe involved diabolical forces.
Speaking to The Nation, Madam Toyin, a spokesperson for the family, revealed that tensions had mounted following the Nigerian Army's proposal to construct a hospital on disputed land in Ilobu in 2023. According to her, these tensions may have played a role in the tragic incident, leaving the family in shock and mourning the loss of their beloved relative.
Pa Tajudeen Lagbaja, the family head, expressed deep regret over a decision he made years ago when he helped his nephew, Taoreed, enter the Nigerian Defence Academy (NDA). Reflecting on this choice, he said, “The year I obtained the NDA form for him, if I had known he would pass away before me, I would not have done so. It is destiny, but I regret obtaining that form for him. I took him as one of my children. We are greatly bereaved, and we are sad.”
The grieving family head recounted how close he was to his nephew, stating that Lt. General Lagbaja had been like a son to him. He added that the general’s contributions to the community would always be remembered, noting, “He constructed a borehole in his father’s compound and other places in the community. His death is so shocking to us. He always gave us hope in the family, despite the sorrow; I give thanks to God.”
Lt. General Lagbaja, who passed away on Tuesday night in Lagos after a brief illness, was respected within his family and community for his generosity and dedication. His unexpected passing has left an irreplaceable void, and his legacy continues to be celebrated amidst the sorrow of his loved ones.
