Tragedy struck early Wednesday morning as unknown gunmen attacked a military checkpoint in Abia State, leaving three soldiers feared dead and one reportedly beheaded. The incident, which occurred at approximately 6:18 a.m., took place near the Carpenter Shed in Ekenobizi Umuopara, before the Onuimo Bridge.
Eyewitnesses report that the attackers launched a surprise assault on the newly established checkpoint, which has been part of recent efforts to boost security in the area. In a disturbing escalation, the gunmen were seen dismantling the sandbags that formed a protective shield for the soldiers, effectively dislodging the checkpoint after overpowering the troops.
Adding to the tension, the attackers allegedly issued a direct warning to Abia State Governor Alex Otti during the incident, a threat that has since intensified concerns over the state’s security situation.
In response to the tragedy, authorities have commenced an investigation and pledged to bring the perpetrators to justice. Security forces have also heightened patrols around the area, with checkpoints reinforced across key locations in an attempt to prevent further attacks and restore calm.
The loss of life has sent shockwaves through the local community, as citizens express grief and concern over the safety of the region amidst rising reports of violence.
