Ven. Arinze Ajaefobi, an Archdeacon of Oyi Central Archdeaconry, has been released after enduring several days in captivity. Ajaefobi was abducted on the night of October 26 around 9:30 p.m. near the gate of St. James’ Parish in Awkuzu, located in Oyi Local Government Area of Anambra State. The priest, who also serves as the Vicar of St. James’ Parish, had the support of his church members who organized prayer sessions for his safe return.
Initially, the abductors did not make any contact with Ajaefobi’s family. However, later, they demanded a ransom of N50 million. A family source revealed that, after some negotiations, the ransom demand was reduced to N30 million. It remains unclear if any ransom payment was made to secure his release.
In an expression of gratitude, the family source shared, “I want to thank you all for your prayers. My family and I are truly grateful, and we won’t forget your support during this time.”
The abduction of Ven. Ajaefobi has raised renewed concerns regarding the safety of religious leaders and the increasing frequency of kidnapping incidents in Anambra State.
