Donald Trump, the United States president-elect, has appointed billionaire entrepreneur Elon Musk to lead a newly formed department focused on enhancing government efficiency. Musk, a prominent supporter of Trump’s campaign to return to the White House, will oversee the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE), collaborating closely with Vivek Ramaswamy, a former Republican presidential contender.
This department, however, is not an official government agency. Instead, it will function as an advisory body, aiming to reduce governmental inefficiencies, eliminate unnecessary regulations, and minimize wasteful spending. The initiative will work in partnership with the Office of Management and Budget, promoting structural reforms across federal agencies to streamline operations.
Trump has expressed his dedication to reshaping the U.S. government, seeking to reduce bureaucracy and improve accountability in managing the nation’s annual spending of $6.5 trillion. The project is scheduled for completion by July 2026, marking the 250th anniversary of the Declaration of Independence. Trump is optimistic that this initiative will lead to a more effective government, ultimately benefiting Americans and fostering greater fiscal responsibility.
