The tragic event, which occurred last week, has left the entire community in mourning. The victims, who resided on Atayese Street, allegedly fell ill shortly after eating the pap. The elderly grandmother was the first to pass away, and her death was initially believed to be natural due to her advanced age. However, suspicions of foul play arose after the children, aged between 3 and 10 years old, who had also consumed the same meal, began experiencing severe pain.
A family member disclosed that the children's mother prepared the pap from the grandmother’s kitchen, which the young ones had craved during their visit to the deceased’s home. The children were immediately rushed to the State Specialist Hospital in Akure, where they fought for their lives for three days before passing away.
The incident has now raised concerns that the pap might have been contaminated, which could have been responsible for the deaths.
In response to the public outcry, law enforcement agencies have begun investigations into the matter. Funmilayo Odunlami-Omisanya, the police spokesperson for Ondo State, confirmed that detectives have been assigned to the case. However, progress has been hindered as the family and neighbors are reportedly unwilling to cooperate with the investigation.
This heartbreaking event has cast a shadow over the Gaga community, as the four children have been buried, with the grandmother’s body still at the morgue. Authorities are expected to continue probing the case to determine the cause of the suspected food poisoning.
