Breaking! Shake-up in the Presidency: Tinubu's Security Chief, Others Sacked

In a notable shake-up within the presidency, Adeboyega Fasasi, the Chief Security Officer (CSO) to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, has been relieved of his duties. This move comes after the Director General of the State Security Service (SSS), Tosin Ajayi, recommended Fasasi's removal. He has been replaced by Rasheed Atanda Lawal, a deputy director in the SSS, who is currently undergoing a fellowship at the National Institute for Security Studies.

President Tinubu approved the change after Fasasi was directed to attend a “strategic course,” which is often a standard reason cited when reshuffling high-ranking security officials close to the presidency. Lawal's appointment is a significant step in his career, having been in line for promotion to director since July 2023—a promotion that was delayed by the previous SSS management. Insiders suggest that internal politics and favoritism played a role in that delay, with other officers being promoted ahead of him.

There are indications that Fasasi’s removal was influenced by his alleged tough management style and the friction it caused within the presidency. Some sources noted that even President Tinubu had raised concerns about Fasasi’s approach to his role. It’s believed that he may have "stepped on too many toes," a factor that possibly led to his reassignment.

This change fits within a broader tradition of the SSS, where a new Director General often replaces the CSO with someone they trust and feel comfortable working with in such a sensitive role. As one insider put it, "The position of CSO is highly strategic, and the DG needs someone they trust completely to manage the security of the president."

Rasheed Atanda Lawal now steps into this critical role, carrying the trust of the new DG. His appointment reflects the shifting dynamics within the SSS, and all eyes will be on how he manages the responsibilities of safeguarding the president in this highly demanding position.
