In what has become a bloody and tragic Sunday, the once peaceful Nibo community in Awka South Local Government Area of Anambra State witnessed a brutal attack as gunmen opened fire on several individuals, leaving an unknown number of casualties in their wake.
The incident unfolded on the afternoon of October 20, 2024, at Oye Nwochichi market, near Nibo old maternity, where the assailants stormed the area and began shooting indiscriminately. Eyewitness reports, corroborated by video footage circulating on social media, revealed that the attackers arrived in a brown Lexus 300 Jeep. After unleashing terror at the market, they proceeded to Eke Nibo Market, where they repeated the deadly assault, adding to the growing number of victims.
Although the official death toll has yet to be confirmed, local sources have reported that at least 10 bodies have been recovered from the scenes of the attacks. Many more are feared dead or injured as the community reels from the shock of the incident.
The Anambra State Police Command has since confirmed the attack. Speaking to the press, SP Ikenga Tochukwu, the Command’s spokesperson, stated that the violence was a result of a clash between rival cult groups.
In response, the State Commissioner of Police, CP Nnaghe Obono Itam, ordered the immediate deployment of additional law enforcement personnel to the affected area. The police have called on eyewitnesses and anyone with information regarding the assailants to come forward. SP Tochukwu assured the public that all information would be treated with the utmost confidentiality. He provided contact numbers for the Command Control Room and the Police Public Relations Officer for anyone willing to assist the investigation.
“The Command is aware of a suspected cult-related clash that occurred on 20/10/2024 in Nibo, Awka South LG. The Commissioner of Police has mandated the immediate deployment of additional operatives to the area for necessary action. Preliminary reports are still emerging, and we urge witnesses of this incident to share any information that may help identify the perpetrators for possible arrest,” SP Tochukwu said.
