BREAKING: NDLEA Arrests Canadian at Lagos Airport, Seizes ₦9bn Worth of Opioids

The National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) has apprehended a Canadian woman, Adrienne Munju, at the Murtala Muhammed International Airport (MMIA), Ikeja, Lagos, for attempting to smuggle a significant quantity of synthetic cannabis into Nigeria. The arrest occurred on Thursday, October 3, while Munju, 41, was undergoing passenger clearance for a KLM flight from Canada.

During the routine search of her luggage, NDLEA officials discovered 74 parcels of ‘Canadian Loud,’ a highly potent strain of synthetic cannabis, with a total weight of 35.20 kilograms. The drugs were concealed in two of her three suitcases. NDLEA spokesperson, Femi Babafemi, confirmed the arrest, adding that Munju admitted she had been recruited online to traffic the drugs in exchange for 10,000 Canadian dollars. Munju further revealed that she took up the offer in a bid to fund her ongoing master’s degree program in Canada.

In a related development, NDLEA operatives at the Port Harcourt Ports in Onne, Rivers State, intercepted a major shipment of opioids. The haul included 13,298,000 pills of Tramadol, Tapentadol, and Carisoprodol, alongside 338,253 bottles of codeine-based cough syrup. The shipment, which originated from India, was uncovered during a joint inspection with the Nigerian Customs Service and other port authorities on October 2 and 3. The drugs, valued at over ₦9 billion, were intended for distribution in Nigeria.

These operations reflect NDLEA’s intensified efforts to combat drug trafficking and curb the inflow of illicit drugs into Nigeria. The agency has called for continued cooperation among international law enforcement agencies to dismantle global drug trafficking networks.
