The Rivers State Independent Electoral Commission (RSIEC) has officially declared Hon. Uzodinma Nwafor, the candidate of the Action Alliance (AA), as the winner of the chairmanship election in Etche Local Government Area. This victory is significant as it marks the only local government where a party outside the Action Peoples Party (APP) secured a win in the recently concluded local government polls across Rivers State. The APP clinched 22 out of the 23 chairmanship positions in the state.
Hon. Nwafor is currently seated alongside the other chairmen-elect as RSIEC prepares to issue certificates of return to all winners in a ceremony that is expected to take place shortly. The event is a prelude to the official swearing-in of the newly elected chairmen by Governor Siminalayi Fubara later in the day.
According to a statement by the Secretary to the State Government, Dr. Tammy Wenike Danagogo, Governor Fubara will administer the oath of office to the council chairmen at 4:00 PM today, October 6, 2024, at the Executive Council Chambers, Government House, Port Harcourt.
This election outcome underscores the continued political competition within Rivers State and highlights the Action Alliance's significant achievement in breaking the near-complete dominance of the Action Peoples Party in the region.
