In response to the recent surge in fuel prices, which has caused significant hardship across Nigeria, the Enugu Motorists Association and tricycle (keke) drivers have introduced new official fare rates for all routes within the metropolis. This development, which was made public today, aims to regulate fare charges and ensure uniformity among drivers, while protecting them from undercharging due to rising operational costs.
As of Friday, September 13, 2024, motorists were seen distributing the newly released price lists on major roads and busy junctions in Enugu, such as Ogui Road, New Haven, Abakpa, and Independence Layout. These price lists outline the official fare for key destinations within the city, giving both drivers and passengers a clear framework to adhere to, following the inflationary impact of the fuel price hike.
This initiative was driven by growing concerns over inconsistent fare charges across the metropolis. With the fuel price nearly tripling in the last few months, many drivers were forced to adjust their rates independently. However, this led to confusion, as some drivers charged exorbitantly high fares while others, in a bid to attract more passengers, set prices that did not reflect the true cost of fuel and vehicle maintenance. This chaotic situation created tension between drivers and commuters.
The new fare list aims to streamline pricing and ensure that no driver collects below the official rate, which they believe will be fair given the prevailing cost of fuel and other vehicle operating expenses. In a statement released by the Enugu Motorists Association, a representative said:
"The economic situation has been very tough on everyone, but we, as drivers, are particularly affected by the skyrocketing fuel prices. This official price list ensures that no driver is underpaid for their services, and passengers can avoid confusion about varying fare rates."
Motorists have called on the relevant authorities, including the Enugu State Transport Management Authority (ESTMA), to ensure strict compliance with the new pricing regime. They have also urged passengers to familiarize themselves with the new fare list to prevent disputes or exploitation by drivers.
Some of the key routes and their corresponding official prices are as follows:
- Amechi to Amawbia : ₦500
- Nise-Kenyatta-Campus 3: ₦400
- Presidential Road to Ogui Junction: ₦400
- PNT to Agbani Road: ₦600
- IMT-POLO Shoprite to : ₦700
This fare review comes after a series of meetings held between various transport unions, including the keke drivers' association, Enugu bus drivers' union, and relevant stakeholders within the transport sector. These groups have all voiced their concerns over the unsustainable costs of operating under the current economic conditions.
While the new fares are designed to reflect the increase in fuel costs, reactions from passengers have been mixed. Some commuters expressed their frustration at the further strain on their finances, with one resident stating:
"Life has become more difficult since the fuel hike. Now we are being asked to pay more for transportation, which affects everything else, including food and daily expenses."
However, some passengers also acknowledged the need for uniformity and clarity in fare pricing. Another commuter remarked:
"At least now, we know what to expect. Before today, some drivers would charge double, while others would undercharge and get angry if you paid less. This new price system is a relief in that sense."
As Enugu adjusts to this new fare structure, it remains to be seen how effectively it will be implemented and monitored. While the motorists and tricycle drivers have laid out a clear plan, ensuring that all drivers adhere to the official prices will require continuous efforts from transport authorities and a willing collaboration between drivers and passengers.
For now, residents of Enugu are encouraged to follow the new pricing guidelines and cooperate with drivers as they navigate the current economic realities.
