…Beneficiaries to Receive Relief as SUMAS Confirms Receipt of 2025/2026 Payment
The Nigerian Education Loan Fund (NELFUND) has released ₦7,786,400 to the State University of Medical and Applied Sciences (SUMAS), Igbo-Eno, Enugu State, to cover approved institutional charges for 26 beneficiaries of the Student Loan Programme.
The disbursement, made on July 6, 2026, relates to the 2025/2026 academic session and forms part of the Federal Government’s intervention to make tertiary education more accessible by providing financial assistance to eligible students.
The university’s Vice Chancellor, Prof. James Chukwuma Ogbonna, FAS, confirmed the payment in an acknowledgement letter addressed to the Managing Director of NELFUND, acknowledging receipt of the total sum of ₦7,786,400 under the Student Loan Programme.
Prof. Ogbonna further disclosed that the university had commenced refunds to students who paid their fees before the NELFUND disbursement was received.
The refund process is expected to ensure that eligible students who had already settled their institutional charges before the loan payment are not disadvantaged by the timing of the disbursement.
For the 26 beneficiaries, the latest intervention provides direct financial support towards their approved institutional charges while easing the immediate financial pressure associated with their education at SUMAS.
NELFUND’s institutional payment mechanism provides for approved school-fee components of beneficiaries’ loans to be transferred directly to their respective institutions, where the funds are applied to eligible charges.
The SUMAS development therefore represents another practical impact of the student loan scheme, with eligible students receiving support while institutions facilitate refunds where fees had already been paid.
The intervention adds to the growing role of the NELFUND programme in helping Nigerian students meet approved educational costs and pursue their academic programmes with reduced financial pressure.
