NELFUND: How Tinubu Is Easing Students’ Financial Burden and Bringing Relief to Nigerian Parents

Through institutional fee payments and upkeep support for eligible beneficiaries, NELFUND is helping students navigate the cost of higher education while giving families greater financial breathing space.

For many Nigerian families, financing higher education involves more than paying tuition and registration charges. Accommodation, feeding, transportation and learning materials add to the cost, placing considerable pressure on household budgets. For some students, these financial demands can threaten their ability to remain in school and complete their studies.

Against this backdrop, the Nigerian Education Loan Fund (NELFUND), established under President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s administration, is providing eligible students with access to interest-free loans to help cover approved institutional charges and, where applicable, upkeep expenses. The initiative is designed to widen access to tertiary education by reducing the immediate financial barriers that can stand between students and their academic ambitions.

One of the programme’s key benefits is its potential to ease the burden of education costs on parents and guardians. By enabling eligible students to access financing for approved charges, NELFUND can help families manage competing financial responsibilities without having to raise the entire amount for school expenses at once. Upkeep support can also assist beneficiaries with essential day-to-day costs, allowing them to devote greater attention to their studies.

Beyond its immediate financial impact, the scheme addresses the risk of interrupted education caused by difficulties meeting institutional charges. Access to financing can give eligible students another opportunity to register, continue their studies and work towards graduation. Its broader value lies in helping ensure that financial hardship does not automatically become a barrier to educational opportunity.

NELFUND’s payment structure also incorporates accountability measures. Approved institutional charges are paid directly to participating institutions, while upkeep support is provided to eligible students in line with programme procedures. This arrangement supports documentation and reconciliation between the Fund and institutions, while providing a framework for resolving payment and verification issues.

The impact of the initiative is reflected in feedback from beneficiary institutions. At the Federal University of Education, Zaria, Kaduna State, the university confirmed receiving **₦163.99 million for the 2025/2026 registration fees of 3,215 students**. In a letter dated September 3, 2026, the institution stated that the funds were received in eight payment batches between December 2025 and February 2026.

The university also reported that receipts were issued to beneficiaries to strengthen transparency, accountability and documentation. Its Vice-Chancellor, Professor Yahaya Isa Bunkure, commended NELFUND for what he described as an exceptional contribution, highlighting its benefits to students, parents, the institution and the wider community amid economic challenges. He expressed the hope that sustained educational support could help address some social problems associated with youth idleness and limited opportunities.

Such institutional commendations highlight how the programme’s potential impact extends beyond individual beneficiaries. When students can meet approved education costs and continue their studies, institutions can strengthen their engagement with the Fund, while communities stand to benefit from a generation with improved opportunities to acquire knowledge and professional skills.

In the long term, broader access to higher education can contribute to human capital development, strengthen employment prospects and support Nigeria’s economic growth. Achieving these outcomes will depend on timely disbursements, accurate student records, transparent administration and clear communication about eligibility and repayment obligations.

Ultimately, NELFUND represents an investment in educational opportunity and the future of Nigerian youth. For President Tinubu’s administration, its success will be measured not merely by the amount disbursed or the number of applications processed, but also by its ability to help eligible students remain in school, complete their education and prepare for productive careers. By reducing financial obstacles to higher education, the initiative offers students a stronger chance to pursue their ambitions while helping families manage the cost of investing in their future.
