Governor Chukwuma Soludo of Anambra State has granted a pardon to popular native doctor Chidozie Nwanyi, popularly known as Akwa Okuko Tiwara Aki, and appointed him as Ambassador for Youth Reformation in the state.
Akwa Okuko was among eight native doctors arrested last year over alleged involvement in the promotion of money rituals, quick wealth and the use of human parts for rituals.
He subsequently entered into a plea bargain with the Anambra State Government and was sentenced to 11 months in prison. As part of the conditions attached to his sentence, he was required to renounce his fetish practices and become an ambassador for youth reformation.
He was serving his sentence at the Nigerian Correctional Service facility in Amawbia, Anambra State, until Governor Soludo granted him a pardon under the prerogative of mercy.
The development was disclosed by the Special Adviser to the Governor on Youth Reformation, Dr Nelson Omenugha, who said Soludo made the announcement during a visit to the correctional facility.
Omenugha expressed appreciation to the governor for extending what he described as a hand of mercy to Akwa Okuko and entrusting him with a new responsibility.
He said the initiative represented the essence of youth reformation, which he described as going beyond punishment to include correction, restoration and providing individuals with a new sense of purpose.
With the pardon, Akwa Okuko Tiwara Aki has regained his freedom and is expected to serve as Ambassador for Youth Reformation in Anambra State.
