Lagos State Governor, Babajide Sanwo-Olu, has approved a ₦50,000 support payment for workers in the state as part of efforts to cushion the effects of the current economic hardship.
The announcement was made during the 2026 Workers’ Day celebration held at the Mobolaji Johnson Arena in Lagos. Represented by his deputy, Obafemi Hamzat, the governor stated that the initiative is aimed at supporting workers across all sectors amid rising living costs.
According to the government, the ₦50,000 payment will be added to workers’ salaries for the month of May and will apply to all categories of employees, regardless of grade level. The measure, however, may be reviewed in the coming months depending on prevailing economic conditions.
Sanwo-Olu emphasized that the growth and development of Lagos rely heavily on the contributions of workers, including teachers, healthcare professionals, artisans, and civil servants. He noted that ongoing economic challenges such as inflation and global energy issues have made it necessary for the government to take proactive steps to support its workforce.
The governor also reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to improving workers’ welfare, enhancing infrastructure, and delivering quality public services. He added that the state government would continue to engage with labour unions to ensure industrial harmony.
On security, Sanwo-Olu highlighted the importance of a safe working environment, noting that the state is investing in security architecture, community policing, and surveillance systems to protect residents.
He further assured that his administration remains focused on completing key projects, including transport and housing initiatives, as well as fulfilling pension obligations before the end of his tenure, stressing that the true legacy of his government will be measured by tangible achievements and lasting impact.
