A devastating road accident has reportedly claimed the lives of over 50 people at Ugwu Onyeama in Enugu State following a late-night inferno on Tuesday.
Eyewitnesses said the tragic incident involved a collision between a truck and a passenger bus, which immediately sparked a fire outbreak. The situation worsened when the truck burst into flames, rapidly spreading the fire to nearby vehicles.
The resulting explosion engulfed multiple vehicles, leaving many victims trapped with little or no chance of escape. Efforts by passersby and nearby residents to rescue those affected were unsuccessful due to the intensity of the blaze.
Emergency responders, including fire service officials and police personnel, arrived at the scene in the early hours of Wednesday. Recovery operations are ongoing, with authorities evacuating bodies from the wreckage as investigations continue into the cause of the incident.
