Former President Goodluck Jonathan has hinted at the possibility of contesting the 2027 presidential election amid growing calls from supporters urging him to return to active politics.
Jonathan made the statement on Thursday in Abuja after a group of supporters reportedly marched to his residence, appealing to him to join the presidential race ahead of the 2027 general elections.
Responding to the calls, the former president said, “Presidential race is not a computer game, but I heard you, and I will consult widely.”
His remarks have further fueled speculations that the former Nigerian leader may join the contest, which is already expected to feature major political figures including President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, Peter Obi and former Vice President Atiku Abubakar.
There are also rumours that Jonathan could contest under the platform of the National Democratic Party (NDP), as sources claim some of the party’s promoters are politically aligned with him and may have formed the party with his potential candidacy in mind.
However, a source quoted in the report expressed doubt over Jonathan’s willingness to run, describing his response to supporters as “a normal political answer.”
The development has already sparked fresh political conversations across the country as preparations for the 2027 elections gradually gather momentum.
