Nigerian skitmaker and political satire creator, Kevin Chinedu, popularly known for his “Governor Amuneke” character, has declined an offer to serve as a youth ambassador for the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), citing restrictions that would limit his ability to criticise the commission.
In a video shared on his X handle on Monday, the content creator revealed that although the offer initially filled him with pride and a sense of recognition, his excitement faded after learning about conditions attached to the role. According to him, while he would be allowed to promote civic engagement and encourage voter participation, he would not be permitted to directly criticise INEC during his tenure.
Amuneke, known for blending humour with sharp socio-political commentary, said the restriction conflicted with the core of his creative identity. He stressed that his work is rooted in holding institutions accountable and reflecting the realities faced by ordinary Nigerians.
“I asked a simple question: ‘Will I still be able to criticise INEC if I’m appointed?’ The response changed everything,” he said, adding that the condition made the role incompatible with his principles.
He noted that his platform draws strength from public sentiment and lived experiences, emphasizing that silencing critical voices would undermine both his authenticity and responsibility to his audience.
While appreciating the recognition and those who recommended him, Amuneke maintained that he could not accept any role that would compromise his independence. He also urged fellow content creators to protect their voices and avoid trading credibility for institutional affiliations or incentives.
His decision reinforces his stance on maintaining creative freedom, having previously turned down offers allegedly aimed at influencing his satirical content.
