INEC to Deregister ADC Ahead of 2027 Elections

The (APC) has called on the (INEC) to remove the (ADC) from the list of political parties eligible to participate in the 2027 general elections.

The APC National Secretary, , made this position known during an interview on Arise Television, arguing that political parties that fail to meet constitutional and electoral thresholds should not remain on the ballot.

Basiru stated that the presence of underperforming parties clutters ballot papers and weakens the electoral process. He emphasized that the APC’s position is not an attempt to intimidate opposition parties but rather a call for strict adherence to existing laws governing party registration and participation.

According to him, the Nigerian constitution clearly outlines conditions under which political parties can be deregistered, particularly when they consistently fail to demonstrate electoral viability and grassroots presence. He insisted that INEC has the authority and responsibility to act accordingly.

The APC chieftain also dismissed concerns that such a move could push Nigeria toward a one-party state, noting that the country still has about 19 registered political parties, even though many lack significant electoral impact.

Basiru further revealed that there are ongoing legal efforts seeking the deregistration of parties that do not meet constitutional requirements, urging INEC to take decisive action ahead of the 2027 elections.
