Prominent figures in the (ADC) on Wednesday staged a “Save Nigeria Democracy” protest at the headquarters of the (INEC) in , raising concerns over the credibility of the country’s democratic institutions.
The protest, which drew hundreds of supporters, featured notable political leaders including , , , , , , and . Demonstrators marched from Maitama Roundabout to INEC headquarters, carrying placards with inscriptions such as “Hands off our courts” and “Judges must give justice.”
Participants accused INEC of partisanship, alleging that the commission is acting in favour of the ruling (APC), thereby undermining democratic processes in the country.
Addressing the crowd, Amaechi spoke from a campaign van, while Atiku Abubakar, in a message shared on social media, described the protest as a peaceful effort to safeguard Nigeria’s democracy and resist any move toward a one-party system. Peter Obi had earlier called on Nigerians to join the demonstration, urging collective resistance against perceived threats to democratic governance. Tambuwal also emphasized the need for a credible, fair, and transparent electoral process.
The protest comes amid a lingering leadership crisis within the ADC. INEC recently derecognised factions led by Nafiu Bala and David Mark, citing a . The decision has deepened internal divisions within the party, with competing factions disputing control.
While Bala accused former national chairman Ralph Nwosu of imposing leadership without due consultation, several state party chairmen reportedly backed INEC’s stance. Meanwhile, the faction aligned with David Mark has continued to fault the electoral body, accusing it of undermining democratic principles.
The demonstration underscores growing political tension ahead of future elections, as opposition figures and party stakeholders call for reforms to strengthen Nigeria’s electoral integrity.
