Former presidential candidate of the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP) and ex-Governor of Kano State, , has officially joined the African Democratic Congress (ADC), marking a significant shift in Nigeria’s evolving political landscape.
Kwankwaso formalized his membership on Monday at Gidan Kwankwasiyya, located along Miller Road in Bompai, Kano, where he was presented with his party membership card.
The high-profile event attracted several influential political figures, including ADC National Chairman and former Senate President, ; former Sokoto State Governor, ; former Minister of Transportation, ; former Labour Party presidential candidate, ; Senator ; and former National Chairman of the All Progressives Congress (APC), , among others.
The development comes just a day after Kwankwaso announced his resignation from the NNPP, citing the need for strategic political realignment amid shifting national dynamics.
In a statement, Kwankwaso described his departure from the NNPP as a difficult but necessary decision, emphasizing his long-standing commitment to the party.
“As a committed and bona fide member, this was not an easy decision to make. However, considering the current trajectory of the nation’s political landscape, I find it necessary to align with a platform that offers a stronger opportunity to effect meaningful change,” he stated.
He expressed appreciation to the party’s leadership, particularly the National Chairman, Ajuji Ahmed, as well as members of the Kwankwasiyya Movement for their unwavering support.
Kwankwaso further assured his supporters of continued collaboration in pursuit of a more prosperous and united Nigeria.
The defection is widely seen as a major political development that could reshape alliances ahead of the 2027 general elections.
