Residents in several parts of Enugu metropolis will experience a temporary power interruption this weekend as MainPower Electricity Distribution Limited (MEDL) begins a major maintenance and upgrade exercise at the Trans‑Ekulu Injection Substation in Enugu.
The development was disclosed in a statement issued on Friday by the company’s Head of Communications, Emeka Ezeh, who explained that the planned maintenance is part of efforts to improve power supply reliability across the affected areas.
According to the statement, the maintenance exercise will involve the installation of a newly procured 11KV indoor switchgear panel, a key component required to strengthen the facility’s operational capacity.
Ezeh noted that the operation will last 48 hours, beginning from 6:30 a.m. on Saturday, March 14, and ending on Sunday, March 15, 2026.
He explained that the upgrade will affect two major 11KV feeders linked to the Trans-Ekulu Injection Substation—Phase 6 feeder and Dhamija feeder—resulting in temporary electricity disruptions for customers served through those lines.
Areas expected to be affected by the outage include Trans-Ekulu Flyover, Oshimiri axis, RCC Quarters, Green Roof, Ugbo Odogwu, Agu Abor, Zion Hill, Ogbanokwute, Ogbuowere, Ugboenyi, Keshington Plaza, Sani Abacha Street, Emeka Abalu Street, the Old Police Station axis, Augustine Agu area, Ogbaga, and Chike Egwuonwu.
Other neighbourhoods listed are Hill View, Dhamija, Agu Owa, St. Mary, St. Andrew, the School of Dental Technology area, North 4th, Road 10, Old Akonobi, Mary Emmanuel, Prof. Anosa, Malunze axis, Green Kpoloko axis, Winners Estate axis, Roads 12, 9 and 8, Ivory Estate, and adjoining communities.
“We appeal for the patience and understanding of our customers who will be affected by this maintenance exercise, as it is aimed at enhancing service delivery,” Ezeh said.
The company further disclosed that the newly installed equipment is valued at approximately ₦200 million, describing it as part of MEDL’s broader investment to strengthen network stability and improve electricity distribution within the city.
Ezeh explained that the current upgrade became necessary following an explosion at the control room of the Trans-Ekulu Injection Substation on January 21, 2026, at about 7:23 p.m., which damaged some critical components at the facility.
He added that the electricity distribution company has already begun procurement processes for additional replacement parts identified across its network, as part of a continuing maintenance and infrastructure improvement programme aimed at ensuring more stable power supply to residents and businesses in Enugu.
MEDL assured customers that the temporary inconvenience will ultimately lead to improved electricity distribution once the upgrade is completed.
