The Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) in Niger State has rejected the proposed Niger State Hisbah Directorates Bill, describing it as controversial and capable of heightening religious tension in the state.
In a statement, the state chapter of CAN expressed concern that establishing a formal Hisbah Directorate could deepen divisions among religious communities and undermine social cohesion.
According to the association, introducing the bill may fuel conflict rather than promote peace, warning that it could create mistrust between Christians and Muslims in the state. CAN officials argued that any legislation perceived to favour one religion over another risks destabilising communal relations.
The group urged members of the state legislature to reconsider the bill and ensure that policies enacted promote unity, mutual respect, and equal protection of rights for all residents, regardless of religious affiliation.
CAN further advised the state government to prioritise inclusive governance and safeguard the constitutional freedoms of citizens.
Religious leaders and civil society organisations are expected to engage lawmakers in dialogue over the proposed legislation to prevent potential escalation of tensions.
