Breaking: Fire Guts Old Terminal of Murtala Muhammed International Airport in Lagos

A fire outbreak has reportedly engulfed the old terminal of Murtala Muhammed International Airport in Lagos.

The incident occurred on Monday, February 23, 2026, at the facility currently undergoing a multi-billion-naira renovation. As of the time of filing this report, details surrounding the cause and extent of damage remain unclear.

Authorities are yet to issue an official statement regarding casualties or the level of disruption to flight operations.

This development comes nearly three years after a similar incident was recorded at the airport. On September 6, 2023, a smoke outbreak occurred at the international wing of the airport. According to the Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN), the incident was traced to a suspected electrical spark at the baggage hall ceiling of Terminal 1. The source of the smoke was later identified as a burning lithium inverter battery installation located in the basement.

Further updates are expected as investigations continue.
