Ahead of the ward congresses of the All Progressives Congress (APC), some governors elected on the party’s platform are reportedly moving to consolidate influence within party structures nationwide in preparation for the 2027 political cycle.
According to reports, the strategy is aimed at positioning Imo State Governor, Hope Uzodimma, for the office of Senate President when the 11th National Assembly leadership is constituted in June 2027.
Uzodimma, who won a second term in November 2023 and currently chairs the Progressives Governors Forum, is said to be eligible to contest for a Senate seat. Sources suggest that if he decides to pursue the position, he may resign as governor to focus on securing the Senate presidency with the backing of fellow APC governors.
A party source quoted in the report indicated that the push is largely being driven by governors who are encouraging Uzodimma to take up the challenge. They are also said to be lobbying the presidency and the party’s national leadership to allow governors greater influence in determining the leadership of both the Senate and the House of Representatives.
Responding through his media aide, Uzodimma reportedly said he was unaware of the organised support but welcomed the development, describing it as a sign of goodwill among colleagues. He also assured that the APC would conduct credible congresses and primaries, dismissing claims that governors intend to dominate internal party processes.
Historically, Nigeria’s Senate has often served as a political landing platform for governors completing their two-term tenure, with informal arrangements sometimes influencing National Assembly leadership contests.
As of the time of filing this report, there is no official confirmation that Bola Ahmed Tinubu has endorsed the governors’ plan regarding the 2027 Senate leadership.
