Nigeria’s Minister of Defence, Alhaji Mohammed Badaru Abubakar, has resigned from office with immediate effect, citing health challenges.
In a resignation letter dated December 1 and addressed to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, Badaru explained that his decision to step down was driven purely by medical considerations. The Presidency confirmed the development through Bayo Onanuga, Special Adviser to the President on Information and Strategy, who noted that President Tinubu has accepted the resignation.
Onanuga added that the President expressed gratitude to Badaru for his service and contributions to national security. He also disclosed that the President is expected to communicate the nomination of a new Defence Minister to the Senate later in the week.
Mohammed Badaru, 63, served as Governor of Jigawa State between 2015 and 2023 before being appointed Minister of Defence on August 21, 2023. His resignation comes at a critical time, following President Tinubu’s declaration of a national security emergency, with further details expected soon.
