Tragedy struck on Thursday in Ezi Village, Ogidi, Idemili North Local Government Area, when unidentified gunmen invaded a burial ceremony, killing four mourners and leaving 25 others critically injured.
A viral video circulating on social media showed victims receiving treatment at an undisclosed hospital. Eyewitnesses recounted that the assailants stormed the burial ground and opened fire indiscriminately, turning the solemn event into chaos.
Confirming the incident, Anambra State Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Tochukwu Ikenga, revealed that preliminary findings suggest the attack was the result of a rival cult clash. He disclosed that 16 expended cartridges were recovered from the scene as evidence.
“Following a distress call in the late hours of September 11, 2025, that armed men suspected to be cultists invaded a burial in Ogidi and opened fire on attendees, four lives were lost while fifteen others sustained serious injuries. Police operatives from Ogidi Division, led by the DPO, immediately mobilized, restored order, and evacuated the victims for medical attention,” Ikenga stated.
The Commissioner of Police, CP Ikioye Orutugu, condemned the killings, describing the incident as “senseless and unacceptable.” He assured the public that the Command is committed to stamping out cult-related violence and criminal activities across the state.
The police appealed to residents to remain calm and vigilant while urging them to provide credible information that could lead to the arrest of the perpetrators.
