Lawmakers of the Abuja Municipal Area Council (AMAC) have impeached the Speaker of the legislative council, Matthew Yare, and replaced him with Jankaro Ibrahim.
The development occurred on Monday during a brief council session where a motion for Yare’s removal was introduced by Mathias Aliu, councillor representing Wuse ward. The motion was adopted through a voice vote conducted by Deputy Speaker Tony Onoja.
Yare, who represents Nyanya ward, is a member of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP). He lost his position to Ibrahim, an All Progressives Congress (APC) councillor representing Kabusa ward.
Immediately after the vote, Ibrahim assumed his new role as presiding officer. He explained that the leadership change was necessitated by the APC securing a majority in the council, now holding eight seats compared to the PDP’s four.
The shake-up comes months after AMAC Chairman, Christopher Maikalangu, defected from the PDP to the APC — a move he argued would help him better serve the residents of the federal capital’s municipal area.
