FLASH: Enugu Governor Peter Mbah Reportedly Set to Dump PDP for APC
Barring any last-minute changes, Governor Peter Ndubuisi Mbah of Enugu State is on the verge of defecting from the opposition Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC), according to reports by Premium Times.
Sources close to the governor revealed that he has held extensive consultations in recent weeks with key political associates and leaders within and outside Enugu State regarding his planned move. Former Enugu governors Chimaroke Nnamani and Sullivan Chime, alongside former Senate President Ken Nnamani—all prominent APC members—are said to have played key roles in persuading him to join the ruling party.
A close associate disclosed that the consultation process will conclude this week, after which a formal defection date will be announced. Governor Mbah, 53, reportedly cited two major reasons for his likely defection: the persistent internal crisis plaguing the PDP at the national level, which he considers a threat to any 2027 political ambition, and what he described as the unfair treatment of the Southeast in the party’s leadership structure.
The governor had earlier threatened to lead the PDP’s Southeast zone out of the party following a leadership dispute over the national secretary position, which eventually favored Samuel Anyanwu, an ally of former Rivers Governor Nyesom Wike, despite the Southeast’s nomination of Sunday Udeh-Okoye.
Although Mbah’s spokesperson Uche Anichukwu acknowledged the ongoing political consultations, he declined to confirm any final decision to leave the PDP.
If the defection proceeds as expected, it will mark a major blow to the PDP, further shrinking its control to nine states and boosting the APC’s dominance to 24 states nationwide. Governor Mbah, who assumed office in 2023, has been widely credited with significant achievements in security, infrastructure, human capital development, and fiscal reforms within his first two years in office.
