Enugu: Catholic Church Mourns Assassination of Nsukka Priest

 



The Catholic Diocese of Nsukka has officially confirmed the brutal killing of one of its priests, Rev. Fr. Matthew Eya, by suspected assassins in Eha-Alumonah, Nsukka Local Government Area of Enugu State.

In a statement released on Saturday, September 20, 2025, the Chancellor of the Diocese, Fr. Cajetan Iyidobi, expressed deep sorrow over the tragic incident, describing it as a moment of “crushing pain and sorrow” for the church.

“Shocked to the marrow, it is with crushing pain and sorrow, yet a total submission to the will of the Almighty God and a firm hope in the resurrection of the dead, that I inform you of the tragic death of yet another brother of ours, Rev. Fr. Matthew Eya,” the statement read. “He was shot dead yesterday, 19 September 2025, along Eha-Alumona – Eha-Ndiagu road. Let us remain ardent in prayer that God sees us through this period of devastating anguish. May his soul rest in peace. Amen.”

The killing, which has thrown the Eha-Alumonah community into tension, has continued to generate widespread reactions and condemnation.

As of the time of filing this report, the Enugu State Police Command has yet to issue an official statement regarding the incident or possible arrests connected to the murder.
