Nigeria’s National Grid Collapses, Causes Widespread Power Outage Across the Country

Nigeria on Wednesday suffered yet another national grid collapse, plunging most parts of the country into a widespread power outage.
According to real-time data from the Independent System Operator (ISO), power generation plummeted from 2,917.83 megawatts (MW) to an alarming 1.5MW between 11:00 a.m. and 12:00 p.m.
Confirming the development, the Abuja Electricity Distribution Company (AEDC) issued a statement on X, disclosing that the blackout in Abuja and other franchise areas was due to a sudden loss of supply from the national grid at 11:23 a.m.
“The power outage currently being experienced is due to a loss of supply from the national grid, affecting electricity supply across our franchise areas. Restoration efforts are ongoing in collaboration with key stakeholders,” AEDC stated.
The collapse has left several states, including the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Abuja, in total blackout, crippling businesses, households, and essential services.
This latest incident adds to Nigeria’s long list of recurring electricity grid failures, raising fresh concerns about the stability of the country’s power sector and the urgent need for sustainable energy solutions.
