A passenger train travelling from Kaduna to Abuja derailed on Tuesday morning, leaving some of its cabins overturned and sparking panic among passengers.
Eyewitnesses described the scene as chaotic, with commuters scrambling in fear to safety. It was not immediately clear what caused the derailment or if there were casualties.
The Kaduna–Abuja rail corridor, one of the busiest in the country, has suffered repeated disruptions in recent years, including the deadly March 2022 attack by armed men.
Authorities are yet to issue an official statement on Tuesday’s incident.
This development comes just a week after the Nigerian Railway Corporation (NRC) confirmed a separate incident on the Abuja–Kaduna Train Service (AKTS), when one of the train’s coach wheels developed a hot axle a few kilometres from Rigasa Station in Kaduna.
According to the NRC’s Chief Public Relations Officer, Callistus Unyimadu, the fault was caused by abnormal temperature and excessive heat on the journal housing. He noted that the situation was immediately brought under control, and the train was safely marshalled to Kaduna.
Following that incident, the NRC apologised to passengers and warned of temporary capacity issues, especially affecting business-class bookings.
