Tragedy struck in the early hours of Monday as a lorry traveling from Kano to Lagos crashed along the Suleja-Lapai road in Niger State, leaving 22 passengers dead and 20 others injured.
The Sector Commander of the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) in Niger State, Aisha Saadu, confirmed the incident in Minna, stating that the accident occurred around 3:40 a.m. The ill-fated lorry was conveying goods alongside 42 male passengers when it crashed in a lone accident.
According to Commander Saadu, 22 passengers died instantly at the scene, while the remaining 20 sustained varying degrees of injuries. Emergency responders from the FRSC units in Lambatta and Suleja quickly arrived at the scene following a distress call.
The injured victims were promptly taken to the Federal Medical Centre, Lambatta, for urgent medical attention, while the bodies of the deceased were deposited at the Suleja General Hospital morgue.
The FRSC is yet to release the full identities of the victims, and investigations into the cause of the crash are underway. This incident adds to the growing concerns about road safety on Nigeria’s major highways, especially involving overloaded or poorly maintained vehicles.
